CRANIAL PROSTHESIS FOR HAIR LOSS

Hair loss insurance coverage, also known as alopecia insurance coverage, is a type of health insurance that helps cover the costs associated with treating hair loss. This coverage can vary widely depending on the insurance provider and the specific policy.
If you have medically induced hair loss, you might have full or partial insurance coverage for a wig—but you have to know what to ask for.
At Jasmine Nicole Real Perucas we understand the challenges of hair loss and are committed to helping you navigate insurance coverage for cranial prostheses.
Many insurance providers, including Cigna, Aetna, and Blue Cross Blue Shield, offer coverage for our Peruca wigs. By completing the necessary consent form, we can assist in verifying your insurance and filing the claim on your behalf.
Our goal is to make this process as seamless as possible, ensuring you receive the support and coverage you deserve.

How to Put In a Cranial Prosthesis Claim
Filing a claim for a cranial prosthesis, such as a medical wig, involves several steps to ensure that your insurance company covers the cost. Here’s how to go about getting coverage for your cranial prosthesis.

Step 1: Obtain a Prescription
Step 2: Verify Insurance Coverage
Step 3: Gather Necessary Documentation
Step 4: Submit the Claim
Step 5: Follow Up
Step 6: Appeal if Necessary
At Realperuca, we can guide you through the necessary steps to complete a claim.

Insurance Payment
Most insurance companies will cover between 80 – 100% of the cost of a cranial prosthesis. Many will allow you to receive one per year for medical hair loss. Wigs for cosmetic reasons are direct policy exclusions, so it’s extremely important that your doctor indicate that the cranial prosthesis is needed for medical reasons.

How long is the process?
The process of obtaining insurance coverage for a cranial prosthesis can vary in duration depending on several factors, including your insurance provider, the completeness of your documentation, and the specifics of your medical condition.

Total Estimated Time:
-
Without Pre-Authorization and Appeals: Approximately 8-12 weeks (2-3 months)
-
With Pre-Authorization and Appeals: Approximately 14-20 weeks (3-5 months)

Tips for a Smoother Process:
-
Stay Organized: Keep all documentation and communications well-organized.
-
Be Proactive: Follow up regularly with your insurance company and respond promptly to any requests for additional information.
-
Seek Assistance: Consider working with a patient advocate or your healthcare provider to navigate the process more efficiently.
By understanding this timeline and staying proactive, you can help ensure a smoother and potentially faster process in obtaining coverage for your cranial prosthesis.

Medical Coverage through your Insurance
1. Call your insurance company and ask if you have coverage for cranial prosthesis (use that exact term—not “wig”!)

2. If your policy covers cranial prosthesis, get a prescription from your doctor

3. Keep a paper trail of all related paperwork and correspondence

4. Remember, you can (and should) appeal a denial
